The Pennsylvania Senate Education Committee recently held a public hearing on Senate Bill 1, which would create Opportunity Scholarships for low income students. The proposal, co-sponsored by Sen. Jeffrey Piccola (R) and Sen. Anthony Williams (D), would provide taxpayer-funded financial assistance, also known as vouchers, to low income students so that they may attend private and parochial schools. As the legislation is currently written, the program begins gradually the first year and increases eligibility the second year with the full program being implemented on year three of the bill’s enactment. The Senate Education Committee is expected to vote on the bill soon.
